Emech Enclosures Next USB plug work both ways around, and be thin and small

The next generation of USB connector will work either way around, and be similar in size to the existing USB 2.0 Micro-B – the one that most phones are charged through – and will deliver video.

Called USB Type-C, “users will no longer need to be concerned with plug orientation or cable direction, making it easier to plug in”, said the USB 3.0 Promoter Group. “The connector, built initially on existing USB 3.1 and USB 2.0 technologies, is being developed to help enable thinner and sleeker product designs, enhance usability and provide a growth path for performance enhancements for future versions of USB.” – including support ‘scalable power charging’ and ‘future USB bus performance’.

“This connector, delivering data, power and video, is the only connector one will need across all devices. It will enable an entirely new super thin class of devices from phones to tablets,” said Alex Peleg of Intel, whicvh partners HP, Microsoft, Renesas and Texas Instruments in the Promoter Group.

Review of the proposed specification will be during the first quarter of 2014, and open to outside comment. Final publication is expected by the middle of 2014 in a supplement to the USB 3.1 specification.
