Microchip has added higher levels of integration for motor-control to its dsPIC33 microcontrollers, and introduced a three-phase gate driver for brushless dc motors.

Called the dsPIC33EP512GM710 family, the controllers have 12 PWM channels (6 pairs), dual 12bit ADCs, multiple 32bit quadrature encoder interfaces, and two CAN modules.

“With this level of integration, the family can independently control two motors with a single MCU,” said the firm. “It can also serve as a communication hub for automotive or industrial applications to connect with multiple CAN busses.”

Members offer 512kbyte flash, 48kbyte RAM and four op amps.

ADC modules can be configured as 10bit 1.1Msample/s with four sample-and-holds, or 12bit 500ksample/s with one sample-and-hold, supporting up to 49 channels.

The firm’s peripheral trigger generator is included for scheduling complex,high-speed peripheral operations.

Applications are expected in: Air conditioners, washing machines, dishwashers and refrigerators.  Automotive cooling fans, fuel pumps, water pumps, and sensors. Industrial embroidery machines, lathes and printers.

Support comes from the firm’s dsPICDEM MCLV-2 development board (DM330021-2) and dsPICDEM MCHV-2 development system (DM330023-2) with the dsPIC33EP512GM706 Single-motor Internal Op Amp PIM (MA330033).

For non-motor control applications, a dsPIC33EP512GM710 General-purpose PIM (MA330035) is offered for Microchip’s Explorer 16 development board (DM240001).

The gate driver, called MCP8024, can drive six n-channel mosfets from 6 to 28V (transients up to 48V) and includes a dc-dc step-down converter to power the associated microcontroller.

Included are three current-sensing operational amplifiers, an over-current comparator, a bi-directional communication interface, configurable driver dead-time management and driver blanking-time control.

A wide temperature range version runs from -40 to +150°C for use under the bonnet of cars. Other expected applications are in air conditioning, motion control and robots.

Package options include: thermally-enhanced 40pin QFN and 48pin TQFP.

There is an evaluation board (ADM00557).

The microcontrollers and drivers are all in production.
