Business Panasonic to sell three fabs to TowerJazz

Panasonic is talking to TowerJazz about selling majority stakes in three chip factories, reports Japan’s Nikkei newspaper.

Panasonic plans to cut half its semiconductor workforce of 14,000 people. It is said to be looking for alliances for its remaining semiconductor businesses.

The three fabs being sold to TowerJazz employ 2,500 people most of whom will move to TowerJazz with the rest being re-deployed within Panasonic.

TowerJazz currently currently operates four manufacturing facilities: Fab 1 and Fab 2 (150mm and 200mm) located in Migdal Haemek, Israel, Fab 3 (200mm) located in Newport Beach, California, and Fab 4 (200mm) located in Nishiwaki,

TowerJazz offers SiGe BiCMOS, mixed-signal and RF CMOS, CMOS image sensor (CIS), power management (BCD), and non-volatile memory (NVM) as well as CMOS and MEMS.

It is being reported that TowerJazz will pay $99 million for the three facilities.
